There’s a wealth of compelling data highlighting the effectiveness of direct mail, not the least of which is a higher response rate than any digital direct marketing medium. In fact, direct mail generates a five to nine times higher response rate than email, paid search or social media.
In the post-pandemic “new normal,” the importance of direct mail is amplified and the need for your message to stand out is more important than ever. While direct mail involves costs – from design and paper to print and postage, there are countless ways to produce effective direct mail pieces for a wide range of budgets.
So what can we do to get the best possible return on a direct mail investment?
One of the USPS incentive promotions currently in effect provides a 2% savings on postage for business mail that utilizes tactile, sensory or interactive features. Having more impact and saving money? That’s a win-win!
Using any of the treatments listed below can qualify your mail piece for the TSI discount if they are visible and distinguishable.
All mailpiece samples must be submitted via USPS mail to the TSI Promotion Office for review and approval no later than one week prior to the mailing date. You can get all the requirements here.

Trailing edge envelopes, like the cable company example produced by our envelope converting operation and pictured below, also qualify for the USPS TSI incentive. Embossing is another qualifying treatment that’s available at MPEC.
With so many great textured papers to choose from, there are multiple ways to create a mailpiece that’s not only more engaging but also qualifies for the TSI promotion based solely on paper choice.

The focus of the Personalized Color Transpromo incentive is on elevating the value of bills and statements, which are key areas of interaction with consumers. It’s intended to incorporate marketing messages highlighted through the use of color, dynamic variable print and personalization – attributes that can foster a better connection with and a response from consumers.
20% of consumers have purchased a new product or service after seeing a message in a bill or statement.
Must be first-class business mail that is a bill or a statement.
Must have a full-color transpromotional marketing/consumer message or visualization of account data.
First-timer for this incentive? Must only meet the color and messaging requirements listed above.
Received the incentive before? You must also meet the personalization requirement.
According to 2019 Gartner research, here’s what consumers would like to see in their bills/statements:
All mailpiece samples must be submitted for review and approval prior to claiming the discount. The sample can be submitted as a color PDF file via email to: [email protected].

If the mailpiece contains a consumer statement that encourages mail diversion; i.e., suggests to recipient they can go online to make the payment, it will not qualify for the incentive.

Mac Papers Envelope Converters (MPEC) has won the Flexographic Technical Association’s highest award for Excellence in Flexography in the envelope category. MPEC was awarded 2018 Best of Show and Gold for its printing of the “Welcome to TruGreen” envelope. MPEC’s entries swept the process printing category, also winning Silver and Bronze.
Overall, MPEC won the following awards in different envelope categories:
According to MPEC Vice President and General Manager Bob Tees, “Printing the TruGreen envelope presented numerous challenges, but our team was up to the task. We are very proud of our people and the quality results they consistently achieve.”
Since 2011, the team at MPEC has received numerous awards from the Flexographic Technical Association, including awards for Best of Show in 2014, 2015, 2016 and now 2018.
Company received the Gold & Best of Show Award for Third-Consecutive Year; Captures Every Award Possible in the Process, Uncoated Paper Category
JACKSONVILLE, Florida (March 28, 2016) – Mac Papers Envelope Converters (MPEC), a Jacksonville, Fla.-based sister company of Mac Papers, Inc., has been honored by the Flexographic Technology Association (FTA) with five 2016 FTA Awards in recognition of envelope print excellence. The awards were issued during the organization’s 2016 FTA Award Show, held last week in Fort Worth, Texas.
“MPEC is honored to accept all of these awards – but particularly excited to receive the Best in Show award for a third year in a row and to have swept the Envelope, Process, Uncoated category,” explained MPEC’s Bob Thole, director of sales. “This recognition is a testament to the fact that MPEC has some of the most talented envelope technicians and the very best pre-press and envelope-folding equipment in the industry, as well as some of the highest standards. Our techniques allow us to offer customers the fastest production times at the lowest cost point, with the highest quality possible. There is no other company that can offer all three of these benefits, and we’re thrilled by the recognition.”
The Gold & Best of Show, is the highest award per category given by the FTA, and marks the third-consecutive year MPEC has earned the recognition. Of the 110 awards given this year, only six print categories received Gold & Best of Show awards. This year, MPEC was honored as such in the Envelope, Process, Uncoated category for its Business is Blooming envelope, developed for Domtar. A judge commented that the design had “extremely clean, solid (four-color process build) on [the] back, along with [an] extremely tight registration – note the small reverses out of the four-color process. High impact, exceptionally attractive and [a] well-executed piece.”
In addition to this top honor, MPEC also took home the Silver and Bronze awards, making the company the only recipient of every award possible in this category. The Silver award was given for the company’s Piedmont Luxury Hotel envelope. One judge noted that the “fades and tonal range made this piece a stand-out. [It has] extremely fine screens going to white; no hard breaks.” The Bronze award went to the Dish Multi-Sport Pack envelope that, according to a judge, had “exceptional solid ink density and consistency. Good tonal range and registration.”
In the Envelope, Screen, Uncoated category, MPEC was also issued Silver and Bronze awards, for its National American Miss and Suddenlink This Month on Demand envelopes, respectively. A judge commented that the National Miss envelope “… [had very] tight registration elements on multiple colors, along with holding small reverses cleanly open.” Another said of the Suddenlink product that it had “good, solid ink density on blue, sharp type and good tonal range in the black vignettes.”
MPEC uses the most advanced web envelope-converting technology, allowing for products to be sheeted, printed, cut, folded, glued and finished in one run on a single folding machine, without interruption. Because in-line envelope conversion can be more challenging than using multiple machines for each step, a high level of skill and advanced equipment is required. Achieving tight registration, as mentioned by the judges above, is a skill that yields crisp printing and easy-to-read reverse text on a colored background.
